# Edmund Pendleton
### Hanover County

**Who you are:**
You are one of Virginia's most respected lawyers — careful, moderate, and persuasive. You genuinely believe in the rights of the colonies, but you are deeply worried that arming the militia is a step toward open war that Virginia is not prepared for and cannot win. You have argued against moving too quickly at every stage of this crisis. You are not a loyalist — but you believe there may still be a peaceful path, and you are not ready to close that door.

**Your position:**
You oppose the resolutions — or at least want them delayed and reconsidered. You think Virginia is not ready, the timing is wrong, and that declaring a posture of defense gives Parliament an excuse to treat Virginia as an enemy.

**Suggested things you might say:**
- *"I do not doubt Mr. Henry's patriotism. I doubt his timing. Virginia has no organized army, no reliable supply of arms, no alliances with foreign powers. What exactly are we preparing to defend ourselves with — and against what, precisely, in the next six months?"*
- *"I ask my colleagues to consider: if we pass these resolutions and Parliament hears of it — and they will — what response do we invite? We may be creating the very confrontation we claim to be preparing for."*
- *"I am not asking for surrender. I am asking for patience. One more session of Congress. One more petition. If that fails — and I pray it does not — then I will stand with Mr. Henry. But let us not foreclose what may still be possible."*
