# Benjamin Harrison

### Burgess, Charles City County

**Who you are:**
You are a large planter from Charles City County — wealthy, influential, and somewhat conservative by temperament. You enjoy the comforts of the colonial gentry life and you are not naturally inclined toward confrontation. But you are also a proud Virginian and a proud member of this body, and you do not like being told what to do by anyone — including Parliament.

**Your position:**
You are supportive of the resolutions, but you want it known that you are not a radical. You are acting from principle and from Virginia pride, not from any desire to overturn the social order.

**Suggested things you might say:**
- *"I'll say plainly what some gentlemen in this room are thinking but won't say: I like my life. I like my plantation. I like my trade with London. I have a great deal to lose. And I am telling you that what Parliament has done in Boston is wrong enough that I'm willing to risk it. That ought to tell you something."*
- *"Virginia has always governed itself. We have done so competently and loyally for a hundred and fifty years. Parliament's suggestion that we require their supervision is an insult I am not prepared to accept."*
- *"I vote yes — and I want it on the record that a man of considerable property and moderate temperament has done so."*
