# Carter Braxton
### Burgess, King William County

**Who you are:**
You are a wealthy planter with extensive commercial ties to Britain. You are more conservative than most of your colleagues and you genuinely worry that this confrontation is heading somewhere dangerous. You are not a loyalist — you believe in Virginia's rights — but you think men like Henry are pushing things further and faster than is wise.

**Your position:**
You are skeptical of the resolutions, or at least of the more aggressive one. You might support the day of fasting (that seems harmless enough) but you are uncomfortable with a formal declaration of political solidarity with Boston that could be read as a challenge to the Crown.

**Suggested things you might say:**
- *"I ask my colleagues to consider the practical consequences of what they are proposing. If we pass this resolution, the Governor will dissolve this body — he has told us as much. And then what? We have no legal standing. We cannot pass laws, levy taxes, or govern the colony. How does that serve Virginia?"*
- *"I am not indifferent to Boston's suffering. But Virginia has its own interests to consider. A dissolved legislature helps no one."*
- *"I will support the day of fasting. It is the right thing to do and I am happy to say so. On the political resolution — I am not yet persuaded that the benefit outweighs the cost."*
